RARE AMES MODEL 1840 CAVALRY OFFICER'S SABER.
This rare Mexican War era regulation Cavalry officer's saber exhibits 36" blade w/ 16" etched panels retaining most of their original shine & luster w/ patriotic motifs including panoplies of arms, eagle, "U.S.", mounted dragoon & standing Indian w/ tomahawk. Sword is accompanied by its correct officer's scabbard w/ wood lining & sm. ring mounts. CONDITION: very good overall. Blade is fine, retaining much of its original polish & luster w/ sm. nicks in cutting edge having sharpening which covers portion of etching. Top of blade is also etched w/ a repeating floral design. "N.P. AMES / CUTLER / SPRINGFIELD" is easily discerned below etched panels. Grip retains approx. 70% of its original leather, worn through at high spots & good twisted brass wire wrap. Hilt has been cleaned w/ traces of plating in protected areas. Tang appears repeened as seen in photos. All in all a very fine example of a very scarce regulation American officer's saber.
