STAFF OFFICER SWORD. This pattern is among the largest of all Confederate officer swords; made by the firm of Kraft Goldschmidt & Kraft of Columbia, SC. Their production is quite small w/ no more than 20 examples of this sword extant. One inscribed example was carried by Confederate General Joseph Kershaw. The massive guard is pierced w/ acorn & oak leaf design w/ a central “CS”. Guard has long decorated flat sided quillon & knuckle bow terminates into pommel in sea serpent head. Lg. brass ferrule, spiral cut wood grip w/ single thin brass wire wrap. Blade has etched 16” panels including makers mark “K G & K” on one side & “COLUMBIA SC” on other. Patriotic motifs include cross cannon, cannon balls, Columbian shield & lg. “CS”. CONDITION: sword overall is very good to fine retaining strong traces of gold on hilt, blade is gray overall, uncleaned, crisp etch panels w/ some original luster. Light staining & pitting near tip. Numerous sm. nicks in cutting edge. Grip appears original though eroded & cracked & has been dyed black matching its original color & varnish. The accompanying reproduction scabbard is made in correct style w/ brass mounts & fits sword well. (02-15787/JS). $12,000-15,000.
