RARE BALL CARBINE BY LAMSON & COMPANY OF VERMONT.
Cal. 50 RF. NSN. Bbl. measures 20 1/2". The Ball repeating carbine is one of the scarcest carbines of the Civil War era. The contract for producing these weapons was signed w/ Lamson & Co. of Windsor, VT in 1864. Delivery of a scant 1,002 carbines was made in May of 1865 thus rendering them too late for service during the Civil War. They likely saw use during the reconstruction period & are generally included in any study or collection of Civil War arms due to their pre-Appomattox contract date. The Ball repeating carbine was a 7 shot repeating, 50 cal. weapon utilizing a self-contained cartridge. It featured a side loading breech mechanism utilizing a lever action trigger guard which when actuated would allow a soldier to insert seven 50 cal. rimfire cartridges into the tubular magazine. The bbl. has a front sight & a sm. folding rear sight. The left side of the receiver is marked, “E.G. LAMSON & CO WINDSOR, VT. U.S. BALL’S PATENT JUNE 23, 1863 MAR 15, 1864”. The hammer & loading port are on the right side of the receiver. Iron trigger guard/lever, buttplate, bbl. bands & ramrod. Matching original wooden stock & forend. CONDITION: bbl. has a well faded plum brown finish. Receiver & other metal parts have areas of original finish, particularly in protected areas. There is notable pitting opposite the loading port. The stock shows expected dents/dings & has a sm. loss at the toe. Very good bore w/ strong rifling. (01-18777/BF). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
