RARE CIVIL WAR 1ST MODEL HENRY LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

Cal. 44. S# 238. Standard configuration w/ 24.25" oct bbl that has integral magazine, brass blade front sight, 2 line address “HENRY’S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860 / MANUFACT’D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT.”, SN 238 at breech rear of vacant dovetailed sight mortise. 1st type Henry ladder rear sight without slide retaining screw graduated to 900 yards found in dovetail slot on top of brass frame. Mounted on straight grain walnut stock w/ 1st model rounded top buttplate w/ large trap & mortise for early 4 piece wood cleaning rod, which is not present. Buttstock has inset sling swivel on left side, bbl. has corresponding sling loop. Both buttplate screws, buttplate, tang, 3 tang screws & the buttstock all have matching original serial number “238”. Barrel under the loading sleeve marked w/ the assembly number 781 w/ partially obliterated number 629 on rear face of loading sleeve which must have been changed as these numbers should match. These early 1st model Henrys were manufactured near the start of the Civil War & many saw service. Survival on 1st models in complete original condition is low & this is an honest survivor. CONDITION: good to very good overall, all original & matching w/ exception of original Henry loading sleeve w/ a different assembly number. Bbl. has mottled brown patina w/ crisp markings, scattered pitting. Brass once cleaned has mostly smooth medium mustard patina, stock is sound & well fit w/ small cosmetic blemishes on affecting overall aesthetic. Mechanics are fine, well-defined rifling in pitted bore. (01-19413/JS). ANTIQUE. $15,000-25,000.
