RARE CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE BOYLE, GAMBLE & MACFEE

CAVALRY SWORD. Overall length: 37 3/4". Blade length: 32". This is a very interesting and scarce Boyle, Gamble & MacFee cavalry saber. The vast majority of cavalry sabers have metal scabbards, however this rare saber is actually normally seen with a brass mounted leather scabbard. This sword features a flat blade and a brass hilt. The guard has a turned down quillon and two branches that join the knuckle bow and proceed to the pommel. The underside of the guard is clearly marked "BOYLE GAMBLE & MACFEE RICHMOND VA". There is a large elongated hole at the top of the knuckle bow to accept a substantial sword knot. The plain pommel has a simple Phrygian helmet design. The grip has professionally replaced leather and wire. The scabbard has a professionally replaced/restored throat and leather body. The plain middle mount and plain tip with an exaggerated drag are most definitely original from the Boyle, Gamble & MacFee factory. CONDITION: blade has a mottled gray patina with some evidence of cleaned pitting. The hilt is quite solid and all Boyle, Gamble & MacFee markings are present. The grip is complete and attractive as restored. The scabbard body is solid and the two lower mounts have a wonderful deep mustard patina. The top mount has a recreated patina that coordinates well. (02-17885/BF). $8,000-11,000.
