RARE DAVID KIRKWOOD HAND MADE BOXLOCK SHOTGUN
WITH 2 SETS OF BARRELS. Cal. 12 Ga. S# 987. Both bbl. sets are engraved "D. KIRKWOOD BOSTON" on slightly raised game ribs. 30" Set appears to be original to the gun, & is of high grade 3 stripe Damascus. Bbl. flats are stamped "D KIRKWOOD" & w/ 1880 patent date. Bottoms of bbls. have Kirkwood's proof w/ remnants of Birmingham provisional proofs. 28" Set appears to be made later by Kirkwood & bbls. are of exceptional, ultra fine mottled Damascus. Belgian proofs on bbl. flats. Both bbl. sets have later type dovetailed through steel bottoms to rear lumps as an attempt to remedy this wear point in earlier guns. Loops are also of Kirkwood's adj. type. Boxlock action features automatic safety (safe position being denoted by a gold band). Action also features Kirkwood's usual square shouldered dolls head dovetail rib extension w/ sliding bolt fastener as well as nickel plated dbl. triggers w/ finger blades checkered. Action is filed w/ Kirkwood's typical dramatic flutes on fences & is engraved w/ geometric borders. "D. KIRKWOOD" is on each side. Steel trigger guard has S# on tang which extends to sunburst horn grip cap. European walnut pistol grip stock is nicely stump figured & measures 13 7/8" over old Silver type pad. Side panels are checkered & top fronts of both sides were filled in at the factory where cocking indicators were either removed or not wanted by the customer who ordered this gun. Point pattern checkering is at grip & a gold oval on toeline is engraved "F. W. P." Matching splinter forend w/ snap off release is near full checkered at rear & has tip of hard rubber w/ raised decoration. 30" Bbls: bore diameters: left - .760, choke .046 (extra full), right - .754, choke .030 (full). Wall thickness: left - .020, right - .016. 28" Bbls: bore diameters: left - .722, choke .014 (mod), right -.724, choke .008 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .028, right - .022. 30" Bbls: DAC: 1 1/2". Action is tight w/ both bbl. sets. 28" Bbls. have chambers lengthened to over 2 3/4". A good example of these very interesting guns. (01-17162/MGM21). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
