RARE DEWITT CONFEDERATE PRESENTATION SWORD TO

CAPT. BEVERLY EVANS, 1ST GEORGIA. Abraham Dewitt of Columbus Georgia made this distinctive branched guard officer’s sword w/ “CS” cast into pommel. Guard is nicely engraved in 3 lines: “PRESENTED TO / CAPT. BEVERLY D. EVANS / BY THE MEN of CO. H. 2ND REGT. GA. STATE TROOPS”. Beverly Daniel Evans was a prominent attorney of Sandersville, Georgia & had long Confederate service originally enlisting March 18, 1861 (before War was declared) as a lieutenant in 1st Georgia Vol. Inf. serving w/ his regiment in Virginia till returning to Georgia early 1862. He was promoted to captain in 13th Georgia State troops in March 1862. On February 16, 1863, Beverly became captain of Co. H, 2nd Georgia State Troops (Gov. Joe Brown’s Georgia State Line). This sword was presented to him about this time. He would remain in this unit through war’s end being promoted Lieut. Col. February 1863 & Col. in September 1864. Col. Evans would command the 2nd Georgia “State Line” regiment during the Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro, Griswoldville, Honey Hill, Savannah & finally Columbus Georgia April 16, 1865, not surrendering till May 1865. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: sm. file of service records of Capt. Evans & research; copy of letter from Evans, December of 1862 telling authorities he has 30 men & wishes to have commission as captain & copy of another letter from Evans’s wife trying to locate his whereabouts in October 1864. 2000 Dated bill of sale. CONDITION: sword overall is good to very good w/ mixed chocolate/copper patina. 31.5” Blade w/ unstopped fuller showing forging flaws, dark iron patina w/ pitting. Grip leather & double twisted wire wrap appear original though pommel is repeened & wood spacers have been inserted at blade opening of hilt to remove any looseness; sword is tight. The accompanying scabbard is wood lined leather w/ pinned top mounts & replaced drag & poorly fit. (02-15794/JS). $5,000-7,000.
