RARE EARLY “W J McELROY” MACON, GEORGIA FOOT

OFFICER SWORD POSSIBLY CARRIED BY LT. CALVIN CALHOUN, 27TH GEORGIA INFANTRY. This early war McElroy exhibits same early blade on known early Macon made blades w/ lg. almost square ricassos. Sword also exhibits unique macon, branched nonfoliate guard w/ undecorated pommel & quillon. 30" Blade has classic long “dagger point” taper unique to McElroy. Blade is deeply etched w/ full firm name “W J McElroy & Co. / Macon Geo”, first national flags, drum & lg. “C.S”. Confederate brass mounted leather scabbard is of type made by College Hill of Nashville w/ distinctive top mount w/ sword ring mounted at bottom of throat which is field engraved “C. Calhoun”. Above name are sets of 19 slashes of unknown meaning, but so neatly cut they must have had meaning to Lt. Calvin Calhoun. There are only 2 C. Calhouns listed in Confederate soldier databases as officers. Charles H. Calhoun enlisted April 29th 1861 as 2nd Lt. in the 5th VA Infantry & died of wounds suffered at Chancellorsville, most likely a Virginian would not have had a Georgia made sword, and Lt. Calvin Calhoun (1830-1886) is most likely candidate who enlisted Sept. 10th 1861 being promoted 3 times to the rank of Capt. in May of 1864 in the 27th GA Infantry. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: sm. file of copied documents concerning Calvin Calhoun’s service record & 2000 dated bill of sale w/ letter of authenticity. CONDITION: very good overall. Blade is overall gray w/ deep, well defined etch & old sharpening. Leather grip is complete w/ scuffing & chipping to high areas. Original twisted brass wire complete & tight. Scabbard mounts have matching patina to hilt. Leather scabbard body has extensive restoration. (02-15780/JS). $12,000-15,000.
