RARE ENGLISH DOGLOCK COLONIAL TRADE GUN, CIRCA
1740. Cal. approx 1". NSN. 37 1/2" Overall. Bbl. 22" partial oct. breech to rnd. flaring like blunderbuss to 1". Lock is marked “WHATELY”. John Whately is listed as Birmingham gunmaker from 1734-1767. Gun is brass mounted w/ tin tacked on buttplate, 3 screw serpentine sideplate is a type found in American archaeological sites of early 18th century (see Evolution of Serpent Sideplate in Hamilton’s Colonial Frontier Guns). An identical example of this blunderbuss is shown on page 190 of Battle Weapons of the American Revolution by George Neumann. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, lock & bbl. have modeled gray to brown patina, brass has light mustard patina, stock is sound w/ long hairline crack starting at buttplate forward w/ numerous sm. dings & dents mechanically fine w/ clear smooth bore.
