RARE GERMAN SS MARKED MODEL 98K BOLT ACTION RIFLE.
Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 684. Bbl. 23 3/4". S# matches on receiver, bolt, floorplate, rear guard screw & front sight. Numbers match on buttstock, upper & lower bands. Replacement bolt does not match numbers on rifle. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. Sight base is marked "K". Inverted "V" front sight. Rifle is early production SS model utilizing a "Gew 98" receiver that has had the original crown & date removed from receiver ring. These rifles were obtained outside normal channels as the German army at that time had the priority in sm. arms procurement. Receiver retains original Gothic "Gew 98" on left rail. Left side of receiver ring has S#, Imperial Eagle acceptance mark, crown "N" proof & obscure crown mark at wood line. Additionally marked w/ "St M G" over "98 GR". Right side of receiver has 3 Imperial crown proofs & tiny crown over "RC". Bbl. SS marked on left side of chamber w/ death's head & horizontal "S". Bbl. shoulder marked on top in front of receiver ring w/ "FS" in oval. Milled bands w/ "H" type upper band. Bands are retained by single spring & both marked w/ straight winged Waffenamt "WAA 63". Cleaning rod & bayonet bar are present. Matching walnut stock set w/ flat type steel buttplate & steel takedown hole. Takedown hole & recoil bolt marked w/ "WAA 63". Buttstock marked on right side w/ 2 droop winged WAA 63 & straight winged German Eagle proof. Buttstock marked underneath at belly w/ S# "7325" "e". Partially legible flat winged eagle & two droop wing eagle WAA 63 & marked under pistol grip w/ two droop wing eagle WAA 63. Well worn WWII vintage leather sling. CONDITION: markings on rifle are generally crisp & legible. Stock finish is original, but has moderate wear & scattered handling marks commensurate w/ long service. Metal has traces of blue in protected areas. Metal is turning gray w/ light wear, scattered small spots of oxidation. Bbl. bands have notably more blue finish. Good bore w/ lightly frosted appearance ahead of chamber & lightly worn lands. (21-1676/RW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
