Cal. 11mm Pinfire. NSN. Bbl. 29 3/4". Ladder rear sight graduated to 1200m. Stud type front sight. This Belgian proofed rifle was reportedly developed by the Gevelot Cartridge Company to compete w/ the Model 1866 Chassepot in French Trials. This rifle has a sliding chamber in which the cartridge does not move forward, but stays fixed in place while a cylindrical chamber slides over it when action is closed. The pinfire cartridge has the pin located in the center parallel to the bore. This rifle is marked on the rear tang w/ "INV ON P. L GEVELOT" & is numbered "23", which number also appears on the bayonet lug. The design utilizes an outside hammer & the trigger guard has a positive latch to hold the action closed. Two band design w/ bayonet bar on right side of bbl. Interestingly for rifle of this period, no cleaning rod is fitted. Bbl. bands are numbered "10". Walnut stock w/ steel buttplate. CONDITION: stock has very nice professional refinish w/ slight loss of wood in inletted areas notable around trigger plate & has scattered sm. handling marks & sm. filled area on top right side of buttstock. Metal has pleasing case-hardened appearance on receiver tang lever & trigger guard. Balance of parts are blue w/ very light wear & scattered handling marks. Good, shiny bore w/ sharp rifling. (01-19378/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
