RARE HYDE & GOODRICH CONFEDERATE FOOT OFFICER

SWORD. This is a fine example of a rarely seen “HYDE & GOODRICH / NEW ORLEANS” marked foot officer’s sword. Hyde & Goodrich were a well known & respected New Orleans fancy goods dealer for over 50 years previous to the Civil War but sold out to Thomas, Griswold & Co. by July 1861. There are very few Confederate Hyde & Goodrich swords known. This is a classic, New Orleans made sword w/ pin knife style ricasso & multi-piece braised hilt & pommel. The accompanying original scabbard fits sword well w/ lg. casting flaw in top ring mount. There are similar casting flaws present in hilt & pommel not seen w/ Thomas, Griswold later production. CONDITION: sword is very good w/ crisp makers mark, blade is gray overall w/ staining & pitting. Florally decorated hilt & pommel have traces of gold plate in protected areas, undecorated quillon slightly bent down. Grip is fine retaining virtually all original leather & twisted brass wire w/ some high edge scuffing. Scabbard is sound, well fit & probably original to this sword showing tiny traces of gold plate in protected areas. All 3 mounts retain their brass attachment screws. Brass mounts and hilt have matching medium mustard patina. (02-15785/JS). $4,000-6,000.
