Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# P58550. Bbl. 23 1 /4". Blade front sight. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. Matching numbers on bolt, stock & receiver. Other visible parts are unnumbered as is typical of VZ24 rifles. Receiver top has 1937 date. Left side of receiver has "E (Czech Lion) 38" acceptance stamp & serial number. The matching P series 1937 VZ24 rifles are widely accepted to be Japanese issued during WW2. It is unknown whether the P series guns were made explicitly for Japan or they were seized from the Chinese. The VZ24s were issued to the Japanese Navy, as they did not always get along well w/ the Japanese army. It also theorized these guns could've been meant for Japanese allied troops in China were 8mm Mauser was the common caliber. Blued finish. Walnut stock set w/ both bottom mounted & left side sling swivels. Bottom of wrist has a few inspection stamps but none appear to be Kanji. Proper cleaning rod present. CONDITION: stock set shows a few chips, a couple dents, scattered dings & handling wear. Metal retains 60% original blue w/ some dings on trigger guard, some edge wear, light oxidation on receiver & scattered fading to gray. Bright near excellent bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. Fred Novy, ASAC. (24-1834/MJC). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
