RARE LETTERED COLT (GIL HEBARD) 38 SPECIAL KIT

SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. Cal. 38 Spl. Mid Range. S# 00627-H. Bbl. 5" marked "COLT 38 SPEC. KIT". Per Nov. 2015 factory letter, shipped: Dec. 14, 1965 (1964-1970) to Captain Jack A. Craig of 8th Infantry Division, Advanced Marksmanship Unit in NY, NY.; 3 firearms in shipment. These match kits were instigated by Gil Hebard (well known distributor of precision shooting products and champion shooter) and offered in 45 ACP as well; O suffix serial number. Less than 400 mfg. in 38 Spl. (H S# suffix) and approximately 1,050 in 45 ACP. All shipped as completely assembled frames with slide assembly components individually wrapped and requiring gunsmith fitting to frame. Frames without assembler marks or VP proof. Predecessor to National Match slides; Government configuration of matte finish with polished sides. Left side indicates kit and shipped without sights but with standard checkered walnut grips. Presently fitted with tall Patridge style front sight and Bo-Mar adj. rear utilizing standard slot with no alteration to slide; adjustable portion extends behind and below the slide. Checkered walnut target grips that blend with 8 ribbed grooved arched mainspring housing. Palm rest on right side and thumbrest on left. Front strap stippled by powered impact tool and chisel. Frame target features of mid length serrated aluminum trigger with over travel adjustment and witness marks from prior shoe installation, polished feed ramp, extended ejector and relieved sides of hammer spur. Barrel bushing fit slide requires wrench yet barrel to bushing fit somewhat loose. Hood and single lug of barrel (flared throat) with tight fit to slide. Spring guide with bullet shaped nose as found on National Match pistols. MAGS: 1 near excellent factory 5 rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: factory letter supporting above information. CONDITION: good to very good overall appearance with light scratches, rub marks on rounded top, occasional spot of peppery oxidation and typical scratch from improper slide stop installation. Barrel and bushing with noticeable stained appearance from cleaning of prior pitting. Although safety functions it does not fully enter slide notch as slide does not fully go forward to match frame appearing due to further fitting required to barrel lugs. Body of rear sight leaf filed on top to reduce notch depth and is slightly bent; likely from blow to top rear. Very good left grip and right with sizable chip at bottom rear above palm rest. Great target trigger pull; good bore with light pitting throughout. (22-3979/NW). CURIO. $1,800-2,500.
