RARE MARTIALLY MARKED COLT 44 CALIBER GANG
BULLET MOLD. Gang molds like this example are difficult to find in good condition because of heavy use during the Civil War, but this example likely ranks among the finest known specimens. A 12 3/4"squad-size gang bullet mold w/ six 44 caliber cavities w/ lubricating groove & rebated base. It has attached sprue cutter w/ turned walnut handles & brass ferrules. The right brass ferrule is stamped, “221”. Metal handles are each stamped w/ a “C” inspector mark on top & a “D” on the bottom of the left handle. Right front is marked “44H”. It is believed that this mold is for the 44 caliber Army revolver or possibly the 44 caliber Model 1855 revolving rifle as it has a pointed bullet rather than the flat-nose bullet required for the Henry or Winchester rifles. CONDITION: mold has obviously been used & only traces of fire blue remain. The mold still operates freely & has sharp defined details to the bullet cavities. Handles have a couple of scattered dents & dings. (02-14651/BF). $500-800.
