RARE MASSACHUSETTS SURCHARGE COLT 2ND
MODEL DRAGOON. Cal. 44. S# 10459. Bbl. 7 1/2" oct. to rnd. Standard configuration. One line New York address on bbl. Trigger guard behind S# stamped “MS.” The MS is a Massachusetts surcharge. An usual feature that is found on several other Mass. dragoons is a sm. “X” stamped on left side of grip over inspectors cartouche. Matching S#s. Most metal parts are stamped w/ sm. sub inspector initials, 1 piece walnut grips have cartouches on either side. Right side: “WAT” (William A. Thornton). Second models are the smallest production of all dragoons w/ only about 1000 being bought by the U.S. Govt. of which 200 or so went to Mass. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, all matching S#s & markings are sharp as well as well defined, metal has been polished, removing probable blue finish which only traces can be found in bbl. well. The cyl. has faint traces of blue w/ crisp, virtually complete rolled Dragoon & Indian fight cyl. scene. Cyl. also retains all 6 crisp safety pins. Grips are well fit, hand worn patina & weak cartouches visible on both sides. Scratched into bottom of one grip “Box 1”. Mechanics are crisp w/ shiny bright bore.
