FRENCH MODEL 1766/68 "CHARLEVILLE" MUSKET.
Cal. .72. NSN. Regulation length 44 3/4", three band fastened, round, smoothbore bbl. w/ "I" proof at breech & top mounted bayonet lug located 1” from muzzle. French 1766 Model flat lockplate measures 6-1/4” w/ “Crown/D” Charleville Arsenal marking forward of the hammer. Regulation full iron mounts, the rear band, w/ the spring improvement feature, is missing. trigger-guard w/ long teardrop finials. Trumpet head iron ramrod & both of its sling swivels. A screw fastened buttplate & flat S shaped sideplate w/ both of its original side bolts. Regulation Model 1766/68 walnut stock w/ fluted comb, sharp contours and a clear “D”-Charleville Arsenal marking on the left side of the buttstock near toe. Period of use, carved American soldier initials “I. W.” in left side of stock near trigger. Overall length approx. 59-1/4". CONDITION: overall very good. Original flintlock condition w/ deeply toned & patinated surfaces. Lightly cleaned forward of hammer. Some modern repairs to lock & replaced frizzed screw. Lock in need of timing. The bbl. retains a dark & untouched, generally smooth, toned patina w/ a very good touch hole & bore. Missing rear bbl. band. The stock is sound w/ smooth, dark brown colored surfaces. Clear markings & signs of period usage. (01-20152/WD). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
