RARE TREDEGAR RICHMOND VIRGINIA MADE 24 POUNDER
FLANK HOWITZER W/ BRONZE PRESENTATION PLAQUE. This fine cannon marked “JRA / TF” (Joseph Reid Anderson/Tredegar Foundry) is dated 1858, Registry No. 24, Rimbase #994, weighing 1,485 lbs., inspected “BH” (Benjamin Huger). These impressive guns were deployed at coastal Forts. This pattern was made from the late 1840’s through the Civil War by several manufacturers. Tredegar made only 25 guns all delivered in 1858, this example being the next to last manufactured, delivered June 25, 1858. The inspector Benjamin Huger went on to be a Confederate General. The cannon made in VA are no doubt the rarest and most historic, especially this example which the War Department gave to the Soldiers and Sailors Monumental Association of Lycoming County, PA. We may never be able to identify the Fort this gun was used at during the War, but we can trace it back over one hundred years as to where it has been. We have never seen another cannon in private hands with such a wonderful bronze presentation plaque as this. CONDITION: very good overall, iron patina, black paint, markings mostly discernable though very light on muzzle facing. Registry # second digit is not discernable but based on sequence of foundry #'s, registry # has to be 24. Well patinaed bronze plaque is missing several pins but is intact and fits barrel well. PROVENANCE: mfg. 1858 at Tredegar Foundry, Richmond, VA. Reno GAR Post #64. Williamsport, PA. 1904; Arthur Auction, Hughesville, PA May 12, 2007; Civil War Preservations 2008. (02-13576/JS). $30,000-50,000.
