RARE “TYPE 1” 1801 DATED SPRINGFIELD FLINTLOCK
MUSKET WITH RARE “US” SURCHARGED BAYONET. Cal. 714. NSN. 59 1/2" overall. Bbl. 44 3/4" w/ “P” over eaglehead over “V” on left breech. This is a rare 1st type Springfield musket which is virtually a copy of the French Charleville musket that served the country so well during the Revolutionary War. Lock is marked w/ eagle above script “US” forward of cock & “SPRINGFIELD” on tail in vertical arc. The buttplate is dated “1801”. There is an inspector mark in stock rear of triggerguard “MW”. Accompanying bayonet has 14" blade surcharged “US” in sm. letters on inside shank. Only 3205 muskets were produced in 1801. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of collector notes & bayonet. CONDITION: very good overall. Appears original complete including ramrod & sling swivels. There is a deep sm. rectangular cartouche “R” which is stamped about 3/8 of an inch above touch hole which is wallowed out. Appears to be original flint, but cock screw, beveled pan, frizzen spring & frizzen screw all appear replaced, so possibly a reconversion but well done w/ mostly original parts. Iron overall is a mottled mixed gray patina w/ pitting at breech. Stock is sound w/ scattered well disguised glue repairs. The accompanying bayonet matches gun well for surface & fits well but still overhangs about a quarter inch over bbl. There is a sm. diamond cartouche impressed on ricasso along w/ “US” surcharge on shank. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (01-17741/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
