RARE & UNIQUE COLT PATERSON MODEL 1839 SADDLE RING
CARBINE. Cal. 52. S# 761. Bbl. 24.5" hexadecagonal (16-sided) to round smoothbore. This may be the only 1839 Paterson carbine with original saddle ring bar, otherwise standard configuration. “The most practical of all Paterson firearms, the model 1839 carbine posted the simplest of mechanisms, and offered the greatest potential for mayhem to the target at the muzzle end. This efficient machine’s production total was rivaled only by the No. 5 Holster or Texas Model revolvers” as stated on page 203 Wilson & Levett's “Paterson Colt Book”. Marked on right side of barrel lug “Patent Arms M’g. Co. Paterson N.J.-Colt’s Pt” terminating on either side with “snake and star” motif. Loading lever obscures rolled address. Browned barrel, remainder of metal blued. Varnished walnut stock. 2.5" Cylinder with rounded shoulders with chamfered chambers. Heavy-duty 2-grooved wedge, rear sight is dovetailed fitted notched block, front sight is iron cone-shaped pin. CONDITION: very good overall, appears original and complete. Good markings, cylinder scene is mostly discernible. The saddle ring bar and attachments appear original, fit and patina are en suite with remainder of gun. If this was not done at the factory, it appears contemporary to use by trained mechanic or armory. Matching serial numbers are seen on cylinder, cylinder collar, barrel, wedge, and loading lever. Traces of original brown are found on barrel, overall plum/brown patina, remainder of metal is gray/brown patina. Mechanically fine, bright frosted smoothbore. (01-18832/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-30,000.
