S S AND POLICE SPORTSFEST OF 1937. Cal. 8.15 x 46R. S# 3913. Bbls. 29 1/2" fitted w/ Haenel patent rear sight, w/ low tangent slide for elevation & windage adj. V-notch rear sight which fits on standard Lange base. Military type front bead is under sight protector. Bottom of bbl. stamped w/ BUG & nitro proofs, caliber & "8.35" date code. The initials "EK" (Ernst Kerner ?) are also stamped. Model 98 lg. ring Mauser action is not maker marked but has matching proofs. Receiver ring is engraved "Gewidmet von der Waffenstadt " SUHL" "ZUM" "Polizei " SPORTFEST U. S S" (runes) "9-11 Juli 1937" "Erfurt" which roughly translates to "Donated By the Gun Making City of Suhl for Police & SS Sports Festival 9-11 July, 1937, in Erfurt." Standard bolt w/ straight handle is correctly proofed & numbered "13". Bolt face is flattened & extractor altered for rimmed cartridge. Bolt shroud is unnumbered as are safety & cocking piece. Bottom metal is unnumbered. Stock of European walnut exhibits fine crotch figure on right side of butt. There is a duffle bag cut 29 7/8" from buttplate which has been repaired. Bbl. channel is stamped w/ correct S# pencil mark "20/6". CONDITION: fine. Metal parts retain over 90% of their blue. Receiver ring engraving cuts through this blue. Stock retains nearly all of a hand rubbed oil finish, cleaned up & rubbed through at duffle cut. Bore is excellent. (20-897/MGM104). CURIO. $2,500-4,000.
