REGIMENTALLY MARKED COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA
1798 CONTRACT MUSKET BY JOHN MILES. Cal. 72. NSN. John Miles had 2 contracts for 2,000 muskets each, one in 1798 and another in 1801. It is not known how many muskets were delivered, but one can assume the 1798 contract was completed. This gun appears to be from part of that first contract w/ 44" bbl. stamped w/ 2 cartouches, 1 "P" w/ liberty cap which is lightly struck & then overstruck w/ deep "P". Top of rear portion of bbl. is stamped "C.P." "75 R.G.M.t" (R. is not visible). Beveled flat lock plate w/ integral rounded pan is stamped "CP" & "MILES" at rear. Flat bodied chamfered cock is reinforced. Frizzen is bridled & feather spring has spear finial. A Charleville inspired stock of American walnut has deeply fluted comb & iron furniture w/ sling loops intact. Right rear of grip is carved w/ initials "H.K.". Bbl. is held by 3 spring-retained bands. Breech plug tang is stamped "700". What appears to be original button head steel ramrod is present. CONDITION: very good. Metal parts undisturbed silver/brown/gray patina w/ numerous minor marks & dents on bbl. Original flintlock. Stock w/ original surfaces have handworn patina at grip & normal carry points. There is some water damage on right side of butt w/ associated cracks, otherwise wood is sound w/ scattered dents & marks. Lock will not cock. A great example of this important early American firearm. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19075/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
