REGIMENTALLY MARKED COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA

MUSKET BY EVANS. Cal. 69. NSN. Owen Evans was granted a contract for 1,000 muskets. This example dates to after 1799 as the 43 3/4" bbl. has deeply struck eagle head & "P" proof at rear. "CP" is stamped at rear in front of tang. Lock in original flint configuration features reinforced cock, slightly faceted integral pan, bridled frizzen & feather spring w/ squashed ovate finial w/ teat. "EVANS" is stamped vertically behind cock along w/ "CP". Stock w/ deeply fluted comb is of Charleville style & stamped "50.REGt-No.19" on right side of comb. Left side is carved "D.Oldenberg" "May 1 1800" (further research would be interesting). Stock attaches to bbl. w/ 3 spring retained bands. Sling loops are present as is old steel ramrod w/ trumpet head. CONDITION: metal parts heavily cleaned to pewter highlights w/ overall pinprick pitting. Lock cleaned, but somewhat smoother. Internals are quite good. Stock has old surfaces removed & reoiled, markings slightly softened. There are repairs either side of bbl. tang. Bbl. channel w/ some minor losses mostly on left side. Lock is very good to fine, relatively crisp. Pitted bore. Known examples by Evans are quite scarce. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19705/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
