RIFLE BY J. BAUM. Cal. 50. NSN. The 40" tapered octagon bbl. is mounted w/ single U-notch rear & steel blade front sights & engraved "J. BAUM" on top flat (J. Baum of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania 1800-1821). Trade percussion lock is not maker marked, but engraved w/ birds & scroll as is flat faced serpentine hammer. Dbl. set triggers are fitted. Dense maple stock of very fancy quilted curly maple grain extends to muzzle w/ 2" brass cap & is pinned to bbl. Stock exhibits rather plain styling & is brass mounted. Trigger guard has finger spur at grip. Crescent buttplate has 3" return & there is a fairly plain rectangular patchbox w/ sideplates & spear finial on right side of butt. Left side has sm. fluted cheekpiece. Hickory ramrod is held by 2 beaded pipes & matching thimble. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron parts retaining dark brown patina. There is considerable loss of metal at breech end from oxidation. Stock retains most of its old possibly original finish w/ numerous knocks & dings but has a pleasing hand worn appearance. Stock is broken through lock area. Bores are pitted. Lock & triggers are operable. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19580/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
