REMINGTON 1865 US ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT PATTERN

MODEL ROLLING BLOCK PISTOL. Cal. 50. S# 1605 (found on bottom of barrel). Rare pistol has standard 1865 features with addition of a brass trigger guard. Trigger guard bow is stamped "PATTERN GUARD / ORDER, JANy 28, 1870. / ORD DEPT. U.S.N.Y.W. / F.M.R." It is known that many of the Model 1865 pistols were converted to Model 1867 configuration in the early 1870's. The 1867 had a standard trigger and trigger guard. This appears to be a prototype or experimental model that facilitated that transition. Bbl. 8 1/2" round with blade sight. Breech end of barrel is marked with Navy anchor. Rolling block action features standard Model 1865 spur trigger. Left side of frame is marked "REMINGTON'S, ILION N.Y. U.S.A. / PAT. MAY 3d NOVEMBER 15th 1866 APRIL 17th 1866". Right side of receiver has inspectors markings "P / F.C.W." Walnut forearm and 1 piece walnut grip. Left panel shows a weak "F.C.W." cartouche. Although approx. 6,500 Model 1865's were produced, they are scarce today due to conversion. CONDITION: metal has faded to a dark brown patina with light surface corrosion. Wood shows wear and handling marks. Lightly pitted bore retain strong rifling. (01-21448/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
