RIFLE WITH BAYONET & SLING. Cal. 58. NSN. Standard configuration w/ 33" blued bbl. has 7-groove rifling w/ 2 folding leaf rear & barley corn front sights & stamped "STEEL" on left side. A bayonet lug is on right side, 4" behind muzzle. Breech section stamped "1863" "U.S." & w/ "V", "P" & eagle proofs. Inspector's initials "GP"(?) are also present. Casehardened lock dated 1863 on tail marked w/ eagle over "Remington's" "ILION N.Y.". "U.S." is toward front along w/ individual letter "P". American walnut stock is brass mounted, has brass patchbox on right side & attaches to bbl. w/ 2 brass spring retained bands. Inspector's initials are on left side of stock opposite lockplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle comes w/ correct type saber bayonet w/ brass handle which is marked w/ inspector's mark "BH". An old leather carrying sling is present in factory loops. CONDITION: very good to fine as found. Bbl. retaining approx. 80% original blue w/ a good scattering of flecking & light rust which may clean. Lock retains some original casehardening color, again needing judicious cleaning. Stock retains 70% of its oil finish w/ some minor dings & losses, a few quite deep. Inspector marks are good. Bore is rusted. Lock is good. Blade of bayonet is considerably soiled & rusted to gray brown. Sling quite tender w/ repairs. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19579/MGM).
