REMINGTON NO.1 SPORTING ROLLING BLOCK RIFLE.

Cal. 45-70. S# 1644. Bbl. is heavy 30" octagon with matching number under forend. Mfg. 1868-1888 having Remington info on top tang. Front barrel dovetail has Winchester Windgauge globe sight (#69; #67 after 1926) made without spirit level; has aperture on post insert. Rear of barrel without sight dovetail; 2 1/4" area relieved having shim with Weaver 63B scope base attached (slight receiver over hang). Bottom of barrel has semi circular brass attachment having two cleaning rod thimbles attached so it resembles a muzzle loader. Cleaning rod (missing) would go full length into threaded fitting in action for retention. Replacement stock set with factory appearing schnable tipped forend (painted tip to give ebony appearance) having brass insert around attachment screw for strength as cleaning rod passage yields very thin wood at this point. Nicely figured straight gripped buttstock having sculptured shadow line cheekpiece; original contoured cast metal buttplate. At receiver juncture of each stock piece are original style flared panels. Action has fine trigger pull plus single set trigger for lightest pull. Action and buttplate are case colored with balance blued. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: cordovan colored lace on leather comb riser. CONDITION: overall good to very good appearance with barrel having thinning finish, edge wear and occasional light peppery oxidation; nice patina tone to brass portion. Very good stock finish with thinning of painted forend tip. Faded grey toned case colors. Rare front sight is almost new in appearance. Both tang screws are proud plus some screws with slightly damaged slots. Breech face cleaned of pitting leaving nice appearing in the white face. Good to very good bore with sharp rifling and light frosting in grooves. Nice example in desirable caliber with special features needing only a cleaning rod. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (01-21283/NW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
