REMINGTON NO. 2 SPORTING ROLLING BLOCK RIFLE.

Cal. 22 LR. S# 7891. Bbl. 26" matching numbered (under forend) octagon with "22" on bottom flat in front of forend plus Remington marks on top flat at rear. Dovetailed sights of elevator adjustable rear plus brass blade in base at front. Mfg. 1873-1909; early examples had Remington info on tang and later production had Remington markings on frame like this one. Distinctive features of perch belly walnut stock set having cast contoured metal buttplate plus metal schnable tip on forend. Ends of small sized frame are curved rather than squared off like most Rolling Blocks plus stock set has slight panels at these junctures. Blued with case colored frame and buttplate. CONDITION: good general appearance with patina, peppery oxidation and handling marks throughout. All original metal finish with very faded grey case colors. Light screw slot marks on all screws. Light stock marks throughout and appearance of old added finish. Barrel has a very professional reline using a turned down barrel (or blank) rather than a low quality small diameter liner as is most often used. This superior method gives much better and more pronounced rifling. Further, the breech end of the liner was stepped so that the only evidence of relining at this point is a bright cartridge rim sized ring with the remainder of the breech area being original in appearance; not an easy task. The muzzle end shows a faint joining line of 5/8" diameter along with a lathe turned flat crown having proper outside edge bevel. A truly masterful (and costly) relining yielding a near excellent bore. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (22-6175/NW). CURIO. $450-650.
