RESTORED GOLDEN AGE KENTUCKY RIFLE.
Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 41-1/2" full oct. signed "J.P. Beck". The hand forged flint lock is unmarked. The possibly restored or possibly replaced curly maple stock is relief carved forward & rear of the cheek piece, forward of the patch box & around the bbl. tang. There is also incise carving around the rear ramrod entrance pipe. The 4 piece brass patch box is engraved & the finial depicts a long neck bird, Distelfink, similar to those used by Frederick Sell & Christian Beck. Relief carving rear of cheek piece also shows a rarely seen Distelfink, only noted previously on two Nicholas Beyer guns. Beyer was apprentice and possible son-in-law of JP Beck. The cheek piece has an 8 pointed engraved brass star held to the stock w/ a wood screw. The heavy beveled brass sideplate is 4-1/2" long & is not engraved. J. P. Beck is named as a gunsmith in records from 1781 to 1810 in Lebanon Borough. He worked from the late 1760's until his death in 1811. CONDITION: good to very good overall as restored. Bbl. signature is badly worn but visible. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (01-21314). ANTIQUE. $12,000-20,000.
