MUSKET. Cal. 77. NSN. 42 1/2" Overall. Bbl. 26 1/2" rnd. cut from the original 42". The only markings on bbl. are sm. British proofs & lg. vertical engraved “M G” & possibly last 2 digits of date “66”. This exact gun is pictured on page 120 of George Neumann’s 1967 text History of Weapons of the American Revolution. “The arm is a heavy naval musket of the 1750 period, with the .77 caliber bbl. shortened to 26.5". It includes a sidebar & ring of the type used by horse troops. The original naval style furniture & stock proofs remain, but the only marking in metal is “MG” on bbl.” Neumann shows another shortened naval musket marked “MASSACHTS BAY” in same text (p. 68). Neumann mentions other known carbines that do not comply w/ official specifications. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, appears original & unaltered since the war. There is an old braised repair to bbl. tang. Iron has mottled gray patina w/ pitting. Stock is sound w/ crisp markings. PROVENANCE: Ex-George Neumann Collection; Ex-Ed Charol Collection.
