REVOLUTIONARY WAR DUTCH FLINTLOCK MUSKET MARKED
“DOUGLAS” PICTURED IN NEUMAN’S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Cal. 75. NSN. American Revolutionary War era Dutch flintlock military musket, 42 1/2” pinned bbl., long brass blade front sight, engraved “DOUGLAS” near breech. Often on Dutch longarms, name on bbl. refers to colonel of regiment & some give opinion as to origin in America. Faceted unmarked lock w/ flat long neck serpentine cock w/ faceted flash pan is unmarked, brass furniture w/ earlier 2 screw buttplate tang & lg. protruding screws on back of buttplate. Stock has moldings around lock, sideplate & bbl. tang, incised line runs length of forestock. This exact gun is pictured as plate 20, page 213 in George Neuman’s 1975 text “Encyclopedia to American Revolution” showing this 2 screw buttplate tang. There are several “Douglass” & “Douglas” marked examples known as American used. Dutch muskets were sold to American colonists prior to & during the revolution. Many identified examples are held by collectors & institutions alike. Indeed, an identified historic Dutch musket of similar configuration but altered w/ bbl. bands sold in October 2019 for $480,000. Markings on this arm are all Dutch in origin as most seen in America. Thumbplate engraved “16 CP”, rear thimble “No. 32”, stock is branded “C / TO”. CONDITION: very good overall, appears original & complete. Markings in wood, brass & iron all discernible. Iron has mottled brown patina w/ light pitting at breech, brass w/ old coat of varnish which has yellowed has medium mustard patina. Rear sling swivel is missing & front sling swivel is loose. Stock is sound & solid w/ hand worn patina. Mechanics functional, smooth clear dark bore. PROVENANCE: Ex-George Neuman collection; Ex-Peter Wainwright collection. (01-17465/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
