REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA EXTREMELY RARE “UNITED
STATES” BRANDED CHARLEVILLE MUSKET. Cal. 75. NSN. Bbl. 45". This is a fine example of a rare & desirable Revolutionary War "United States" branded Model 1763 Charleville musket. On March 31, 1777, George Washington directed that all Continental Arms be stamped w/ "United States". According to George D. Moller in his text American Military Shoulder Arms, Vol. I., 1993, this is the earliest identification mark on Continental muskets. In addition to the lg. 2 line brand, the lock has “US” surcharge at tail & there is another later “US” cartouche in a stippled circle from Federal era. Musket is in standard Charleville configuration 45" .75 caliber bbl., iron mounted w/ sling swivels attached to middle band & trigger guard. Accompanying bayonet fits musket well w/ an early ring closure. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: collector notes & bayonet. CONDITION: good to very good overall, metal is overall dark w/ brown patina, pitting on lock & at breech. Relined touch hole. Stock is well fit w/ the normal cosmetic blemishes from 250 years. Appears original & complete w/ replaced cock screw. Mechanically functional though cock will not hold at half cock. Smooth clear bore w/ pitting. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (01-17752/JS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-8,000.
