RM BIGHORN SHEEP PERMIT - THREE AFFILIATED TRIBES FISH & WILDLIFE DIVISION
The Three Affiliated Tribes Fish and Wildlife Division (TAT FW) is pleased to offer the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation’s first-ever Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep auction permit. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will allow a hunter the chance to pursue bighorn sheep on the same historic and scenic lands where Lewis & Clark first met Sakakawea and wintered with the Mandan during their Corps of Discovery expedition in 1804. The reservation spans nearly 1,000 square miles in size and is located on the Missouri River in beautiful west-central North Dakota. This rugged and diverse country contains North Dakota badlands and “breaks” of the Missouri and Little Missouri Rivers. This historic opportunity is the fruition of the successful 2020 bighorn sheep transplant from the Rocky Boy Reservation in north central Montana. The transplant was initiated and supported by KUIU, with wildlife biologist Brett Wiedmann of the N.D. Game and Fish Department conducting the capture and transplant.
The successful bidder may hunt any bighorn ram within the Mandaree or Twin Buttes Units during the 2026 hunting season (October 17th - December 31st). TAT FWD has designated Little Missouri Bighorns as the contact for all hunting inquiries and to lead coordination of bighorn sheep hunting on the reservation. Please contact Little Missouri Bighorns at 863-412-3668. The hunt will be professionally guided for a fee of $8,000.00. Excellent accommodations are available near the hunting area. The bighorn sheep licensee hunting will be allowed to hunt with a weapon of their choice (please contact LMB for specific legal requirements).
Up to three non-hunting companions are welcome to accompany the bighorn sheep licensee while hunting in the field. All hunters must comply with the rules and regulations outlined in the TAT FWD 2026 hunting proclamations and other TAT Tribal Law and Policy. A 5% buyer’s premium will be applied to the auction price by Midwest Chapter WSF for wild sheep conservation.
