ROSS M10 SNIPER STRAIGHT PULL RIFLE.

Cal. 303 Brit. S# 343. Bbl. 31". The Canadian Ross M1910/MK3 straight pull rifle is widely regarded as one of the worst infantry rifles of all time. The rifles had tremendous jamming problems in the trenches of France during the Great War, especially when fired rapidly. The other major shortcoming of the Ross M10, was that the bolt could be reassembled improperly by a soldier. When an improperly reassembled bolt was inserted to a rifle & fired the bolt had the potential to blow back in the shooters face causing serious injury or even death. Because of these shortcomings the rifle was gradually replaced by the British Lee Enfield as a general issue rifle for the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the Great War. The Ross however had one major advantage over other rifles of the period, its long range accuracy. Because of this the rifle would be favored by Canadian snipers during the Great War. Herbert McBride, an American who fought w/ the CEF in France, famously used a Ross M10 to great effect against the Germans. McBride was the author of the well-known book "A Rifleman Went to War" & "The Emma Gees". This rifle appears to be an assembled piece w/ an American contract M1913 Warner & Swasey Scope but it would make a good stand-in given genuine Ross sniper rifles rarity. The scope has a rubber eyepiece, a top mounted data plate & is graduated to 3000yds. Scope has a fine crosshair reticle & the optics are dirty. Scope base is marked "S.E.A.D" & " left side of receiver is marked "343". Ladder rear sight graduated to 1200yds. Blade front sight w/ hood. Top of receiver is marked "ROSS RIFLE CO./CANADA/M-10/PATENTED". Rear of bbl. is marked "L.C." for large chamber. Walnut stock set w/ bottom mounted sling swivels. Right side of butt has Quebec roundel, "III." marking, a 60/1918 date, "MK" inspector's marking, Canadian broad arrow & "SCOPE No 343" marking.
