Rare and Genuine 19th Century U.S. Patent Office Model ''Machine for Grooving Bullets'', Patent No. 153310 granted to H. Borchardt on July 21, 1874, measures 5'' tall and 4.25'' diameter including turned hardwood base. Consists of a 3-level geared brass device with a 2.5'' revolving disk at top. Unsure how it works, as two of the gear levels seem to work against each other, and the purpose of the top disk is unclear. It is accompanied by a 3''x3.125'' manila card tag marked on the obverse ''153310/H.Borchardt/Machine for/Grooving Bullets./Patented July 21st/1874'', and on the reverse, ''Model taken from the debris of the fire of Sept. 24, 1877'', tied to the machine with faded red ribbon; a newer tag reads ''153310/Certified to be the original model from the U.S. Patent Office-1830-1880/New Haven, Conn./Assig. To the Winchester Repeating Company Same Place / Cliff Petersen Collection'' in Santa Monica, CA. Condition to all is very good showing genuine age (1874 tag is rather fragile, as expected) but correct and complete. Est.: $350-$600.
