Rare U.S. WWI Model 1906 Experimental Cavalry Saber, by Ames, 29.75'' blade marked ''U.S.'' on one side and ''A.S. Co. / (flaming bomb) / 1906'' (Ames Sword Co.) on the obverse; wood grip is 6'' in length and covered in fishskin, which is wound with one strand of twisted and two strands of plain brass wire. Pommel cap with iron that has been crosshatched to resemble the fishskin texture. No scabbard. Condition is good showing crazing to fishskin between wire wrap and at top edge where it meets pommel cap; wire wrap to grip is tight and complete. Blued guard shows thinning and has toned to an overall dark patina, as well as scattered fine surface rust. Blade shows pitting, dark spotting and signs of being polished. Blade marking remains well defined and clear. Est.: $400-$600.
