Rare Civil War Lindner's Patent Breechloading Percussion Saddle-Ring Carbine, First Type, NVSN, .58 cal., unmarked 20" round barrel, small blade front sight, notched leaf rear sight mounted atop tang; breech has unique 1.75" rotating collar with large oval knob that when turned to the left unlocks the 3" octagonal breechblock marked "Edward Lindner's/Patent/March 29, 1859" on top, which flips up via spring-action for loading; beveled lockplate is unmarked. Iron fittings include loop trigger guard having long rear tang, carbine buttplate, left-side sling ring, nosecap. Oil-stained walnut halfstock has raised panels either side of lock, retaining screw with oblong escutcheon plate at underside. Mfg'd ca. 1861-63, in only 892 qty. Condition is good, the barrel, trigger guard and nosecap with a brownish tone and the receiver with much original polish, showing overall light discoloration, buttplate dark with moderate-to-heavy erosion. Stock is sound showing marks, dings and minor gouges of age and military use, especially forend; 2.75" sliver of wood at front of nipple bolster is loose, but present, 3.5" secure crack extends from sling ring mount to front of rotating breech collar. Action is strong, bore is bright with sharp rifling. Very rare. Est.: $2,500-$4,000. (Antique)
