Rare Civil War Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 Navy Lever Action Rifle, #458, .52 RF cal., 27-5/8'' heavy octagonal barrel slides forward for loading when underlever is actuated; steel receiver marked on right side ''Sharps/&/Hankins/Philada.'' in four lines, and ''Sharps/Patent/1859'' in three lines on left; brass buttplate; oil-finished walnut stocks. Mfg'd 1861-62, in a quantity of only approx. 700 rifles. Originally with blued barrel and bands; case hardened frame, upper and lower tangs, hammer, lever and nosecap; unfinished brass buttplate. Condition is fair to good showing no original finish with age darkening and scattered erosion, the barrel having been shortened from its original 32.75'' length with a block-blade front sight added and two vacant rear sight dovetails ahead of breech; missing walnut forend, three barrel bands (middle with sling swivel) and nosecap; buttstock a replacement having no provision for the lower sling swivel. Clear markings; mostly unblemished screw head slots. Action functions as designed; bore is fairly shiny with deep rifling. A scarce official-purchase rifle, used by Marine guards aboard U.S. Navy ships. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
