Rare Cornish's Patent Breechloading Conversion Tower P-1856 Single Shot Saddle-Ring Carbine, #25, .577 CF cal., 20" round barrel marked with four British proof marks and "25" twice at breech, with block-blade front and 2-leaf rear sights; 1.875" breech marked "Cornish's Patent" in an oval has hinged "trapdoor" block with knurled thumb lever, floating firing pin and right-side manual extractor button, sloped ramp for cartridge insertion; flat lockplate marked "Tower/1867" ahead of hammer and "(large crown) GR" behind; mountings consist of brass trigger guard, buttplate and nosecap, iron left-side saddle ring and bar, two clamping bands retaining the button-tipped hinged-stirrup ramrod. Oil-finished walnut fullstock marked "W. Hughes/Maker/38 Lime St./London" in oval cartouche at right, has raised panels at each side of lock, step at lower band. Mfg'd 1867. Condition is good having overall cleaned pitting to barrel and bands, silvered-out case colors, moderate patina to brass. Patent breech is smooth metal with fine markings. Stock is sound and smooth with minor marks and nice finish; metal edges and markings are sharp. Action is crisp, bore is bright having overall light frosting and fine rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000.
