Rare Early U.S. Model 1892 Krag Bolt Action Rifle, #7471, .30-40 cal., 30" barrel, blued finish, walnut stock, blade front sight and Model 1896 folding leaf rear sight. Marked on left side of receiver "U.S./1894./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY./1471". Rifle is an early production Model 1892 that was later arsenal updated to the Model 1896 configuration by removing the cleaning rod and filling in the channel and installing a smooth buttplate with trapdoor. A Model 1896 rear sight has also been installed. Includes a nickel oiler in near excellent condition. Condition overall is very good with the metal retaining approx. 50% finish, which is mottled in places and shows light surface rust on the buttplate. Wood appears to have been sanded and oiled, showing cracks on the right side of the hand guard at the rear rivet. There are two small vertical holes on left side of the forend at the wrist. Condition is now very good with finish fading across the buttstock, light scratches to underside of wrist, and other scattered handling marks. Action and magazine operate smoothly; bright bore is very good. An early first-year production rifle that probably saw service during the Spanish-American War. Est.: $2,000-$2,500. (Antique)
