Extremely Rare Engraved and Gold Inlaid Cased Pair of Colt Commemorative 1777-1977 1860 Army U.S. Cavalry Single Action Revolvers, with engraved shoulder stock and accessories. Consists of a pair of 1860 Army Revolvers, #2988US and #US2988, .44 perc. cal., 8'' barrels, dark blue finish, roll engraved naval battle scene on the cylinders, color case hardened frame, hammer, and loading lever, with brass trigger guards; both with one-piece walnut grips, each grip with inspector's cartouche. This beautiful set of revolvers features wolf's head engraving on the hammers, Class ''A'' vine style scroll engraving on the barrels, Class ''B'' on the frame. Bottom of trigger guard on each revolver is marked ''Set No. 28''. Left side of frame is marked in gold ''28 of 40'', with gold band at the muzzle, breech, and rear of cylinder with a gold star between each chamber. Includes a matching numbered walnut shoulder stock with brass hardware and blued saddle ring, nipple wrench, bullet mold, empty cap tin, powder flask, two yellow hang tags, and two keys. Brass portion of the shoulder stock, powder flask collar, sides of bullet mold, and sides of the nipple wrench show vine style scroll engraving. Wood display case with commemorative Cavalry plaque mounted to lid, as well as an additional plaque marked ''Custom Engraved U.S. Cavalry Commemorative 1 of 40'' and blue interior. Both revolvers are unfired, one appears as new. The second revolver is also unfired but has a few blemishes and scratches to the lower left edge of the barrel in between the cylinder and loading lever, which could probably be cleaned and touched up by a professional. Case colors remain vivid and strong; all engraving, factory lettering, and grip cartouches are crisp. Both trigger guards show light toning, and both with intermittent light handling marks to the grips. Accessories are mostly excellent, brass hardware on shoulder stock shows mild tarnishing; right side with an area of light scratching. Case is fine with scattered light scuffs and scratches to the lid and brass plaques; interior is like new. Although there were 40 gold inlaid sets produced, only 23 feature factory engraving.
