Rare French Model 1896 Daudeteau Bolt Action Rifle, #161, 6.5mm Daudeteau cal., 22.5" barrel, blued finish, hardwood stock, inverted "V" front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight. Marked on left side receiver "S.F.A.P. St. Denis/ L.Daudeteau". Top of receiver ring marked "(S inside shield)/161/(crowned arms)". Right side marked "ST CHAMOND/P(cannon)C". "67" marked on bolt handle. Includes cleaning rod with repaired brass tip and French leather sling in very good condition. Condition overall is very good with the metal retaining approx. 50% finish, which is turning a mottled silver color and showing areas of old pitting to the magazine, shank, and barrel. Wood shows a rough gouged area on the stock comb and a deep impression at rear barrel band, otherwise striped wood is very good with an even color and overall mostly old scratches and handling marks. Bore has darkening in the grooves, otherwise very good, with very good rifling. No visible import marks. This rare rifle was produced for testing during the 1895/96 French Navy Trials but not adopted. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
