Rare Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1873-77 Cadet Rifle, #133894, .45-70 Gov't CF cal., 29.5" barrel marked "V/P/(eaglehead)/P" and "A" at breech, has later Buffington long-range rear sight; correct flush-fit receiver; trapdoor marked "U.S./Model/1873" is the transitional 1877 "low arch" breechblock; lockplate, ramrod, fittings and markings are standard M-1873 (guard has sling swivel, upper stacking swivel had 1 loop removed) as is the short-comb stock. Mfg'd 1877-78 with usual finishes, but only 1,050 qty., making it one of the rarest Trapdoor variations. Condition is good retaining little original finish, showing overall cleaned gray gunmetal with scattered etching, fine edges and markings. Stock is sound showing scattered marks of age and military use, lacks left-side inspector cartouche. Action is crisp, bright bore shows 4" frosting at muzzle, sharp rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200.
