Rare J.J. Reeb, Hofbuchsenmacher, Bonn Clamshell Double Rifle, #3037, 10.75 x 65R Grundig (tapered 12.4 mm base) cal., 25.5" chopper lump barrels with blue finish, 7/16" solid matted rib with inset single-claw mount bases, small adjustable platinum tipped blade front sight, dovetailed fixed "U"-notch rear sight, large third fastener with cross bolt, rib mounted 3/4" sling swivel and Nitro proofs. Color case hardened modified boxlock "Clamshell" action has oversized reinforcing bolsters, and complementing the design of the scalloped action is unusual clamshell and nautilus ocean themed engraving patterns, double-set triggers, cocking indicator pins, manual safety, pressed in striker discs, and horn trigger guard. The checkered, marbled French walnut round knob stock and splinter forend are finished in a semi-gloss varnish, with a medium cheekpiece, horn drop points, sling swivel, and four-cartridge trap on the toe, line engraved with an elongated diamond pattern on the cover. Length of pull is 14" to the thin checkered horn buttplate. The overall weight of the rifle is 7 1/8 lbs. Markings indicate the rifle was proofed in Suhl prior to September 1912, with the 72.68 gauge number. The service charge marking "(Crown)/N" indicating a smokeless chambering, 3.6g = 55.5 gr of "GewehrBlattchenpulver" or rifle flake powder, "Stahlmantel Geschoss" or steel jacketed bullet is also in the up to 1912 style. Mechanically the condition is very good, showing only occasional use. The barrels display approx. 90% blue finish drifting to brown with scattered oxidation, scuffs, and scratches. The breech face and muzzles show light oxidation. Case colored finish has been buffed to silver, with traces of bright remaining inside the frame. There is a stock repair and the forend shows a 2" splinter chip at the right front. Additionally, there is a small chip missing at the top right wrist area. The action is tight on face, triggers are light and bores show strong rifling with bright chambers. Johann Jakob Reeb, 1843-1924 was gunmaker to the court of Prince Leupold of Prussia and Crown Prince Wilhelm, son of Wilhelm II. Est.: $3,000-$5,000. (C&R)
