Rare U.S. Springfield Model 1880 Trapdoor Rifle, with Sliding Triangular Ramrod-Bayonet and Sling, #156969, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 32.6" round barrel with standard sights (front also bayonet lug), marked "V/P/(eagle head)/P" at breech; receiver has low-arch breechblock, "US/Model/1873" at hinge, standard lock markings; usual steel fittings but for triangular ramrod/bayonet assembly specific to this model. Oil-stained walnut fullstock is stamped "8" and "82" at right butt, "8" with 1.25" oval German silver plate marked "40/26" at comb, has rectangular "SWP/1881" cartouche of inspector Samuel W. Porter at left wrist, hinged door opening to butt trap for tools (not present). Mfg'd ca. 1880-81 in just 1,001 qty. Condition is good retaining no original finishes but overall cleaned moderate to heavy pitting (heavier at buttplate, lockplate smoother with fine markings). Stock is sound showing scattered nicks and dings (esp. right side below rear sight), clear markings. Modern russet leather sling appears as new. Action is strong and crisp, bore shows overall pitting and good rifling. A desirable trapdoor variant. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
