Rare Whitney pre-production prototype revolver S/N 103 marked “Pat’D applied for” with ownership attributed to Eli Whitney Jr. Referred to as the hooded cylinder revolver and was the first pistol made at theWhitneyville Armory after the Walker Colt. This pistol is a variation with rebated cylinder and grooves between each cylinder to avoid conflict with Colt’s patent on the bored through cylinder. Only 250 totalproduced and this variation is extremely rare with only a handful extant. The revolver shows a 5” octagon barrel with silver plated frame, etched cylinder, and varnished wood grips. The barrel shows 60%-80% originalthinning and toning blue finish with crisp edges and sharp markings. The frame and cylinder shield retain 80%-90% original darkened silver plate and “Patent applied for” on each side of the shield at the edge.The etching on the cylinder is mostly visible with about 50% blue going to a natural patina. The hammer and trigger show most original fire blue finish. The grips are very good plus with slight storage and handling
