Read & Watson Confederate issue rifle formerly identified as the work of J.B. Barrett. Both Read and Barrett were from Virginia. The rifle shows a large brass breech with 33” barrel and 48” over all in.54 caliber percussion. These rifle utilized Hall rifle parts in inventory at Virginia Armories (Refer Flayderman 10-025). The barrel shows light to slightly heavy scattered pitting and erosion within a grayto brown patina finish which matches the hammer and trigger guard well. The bands show light to heavy scattered pitting. The brass was cleaned long ago and is now aging back nicely. The stock is good with somedarkening, a crack between the frame and the forend and another crack on the bottom of the stock by the trigger guard. Showing some small losses around the ramrod channel and some shrinkage around the butt plate withweathering. The original sling swivels are retained and a pitted ramrod that matches the patina is included. No evidence of restoration of any sort and a very difficult to obtain Confederate arm with the more
