Antique Civil War U.S. Army contract single action percussion revolver chambered for .44 caliber ammunition, circa 1863-1875. The serial number puts it in the Civil War time frame. Approximate date of manufacture-October, 1864. Features an 8" octagonal barrel, small blade front sight, 'v' notched rear sight in topstrap, loading lever, non-fluted six shot cylinder with safety notches, smooth trigger, knurled hammer spur, brass trigger guard and two-piece walnut grips. Serial numbers match on the grip frame under the left grip panel, and the barrel, no other serial numbers observed. Inspector stamps are found on the loading lever, frame, trigger guard and barrel, clear "OWA" inspector's cartouche on left grip.(Orville W. Ainsworth, a key sub-inspector for the U.S. Ordnance Department during the Civil War era). Two-line barrel address is crisp/clear, the "New Model" under it is feint but readable. Revolver exhibits no original blue with a gray/brown patina with scattered patches of light pitting, appears to have been cleaned at some point The bore is bright, strong rifling, with scattered light pitting, nipples appear good. Action works well. The 3 click hammer action is crisp. Comes in a Union Civil War sword belt that was used after the war, consists of a M1851 officers/cavalry sword belt with one square brass suspension loop for sword hangers/cross straps, M1851 Eagle belt buckle with applied silver wreath matching Benchmark number "955" on the buckle & keeper, Civil war period flap holster, belt loop attached by two large rivets, the securing strap and plug are missing, the seam of the holster has separated and stitched with sinew, indicating possible Native American use. the outline of the cylinder matches the revolver and have been together a long time. The belt has a very old cloth repair, belt and holster have seen very hard use, have that "Been There" look.
