American made bolt-action centerfire rifle chambered for .222 Remington, and manufactured circa 1968 in Ilion, NY. The Model 788 chambered in .222 Rem. was first produced in 1967 until 1979, and then produced again from 1982 until 1983. Rifle features a blued finish, receiver drilled and tapped for optic mounting, short action, 24" tapered barrel, barrel drilled and tapped for iron sights, straight bolt handle, accepts detachable magazines, serrated right receiver mounted manual safety, and a smooth curved trigger. The hardwood furniture consists of a smooth semi-pistol gripped shoulder stock, smooth forend with a sling stud, sling stud in the bottom of the shoulder stock, and a serrated factory black plastic butt plate. The blued finish retained is approximately 65% with some handling marks, edge wear, and very thin finish on the receiver and bottom metal. The finish appears to have different levels and tones of patina. Metal displays no deformation, but does have a rust colored spot on the trigger guard, and what may be rust inside the bolt knob. Furniture wood is in good condition with handling blemishes, and marks left by sling swivels. The action is questionable, the trigger functions, but we were not able to release the bolt. The bore shows rifling and some oxidation speckling. Rifle includes one magazine total.
