Remington Model 8D Peerless is a factory-engraved, deluxe semi-automatic sporting rifle designed by John Browning. Manufactured 1913, left lower barrel stamped "BL 3" and right lower barrel stamped "G3" January 1922 (the "BL" stamp), the owner sent it back to Ilion, New York. Remington's custom shop custom-fitted a brand new barrel jacket, hand-engraved the matching scroll wedges onto the new breech, and stamped it "BL 3".Sixteen years later, in April 1938 (the "G3" stamp), it returned for standard maintenance, likely a mechanical tune-up, spring replacement, or a professional factory re-bluing to preserve its beautiful engraving. Produced between 1906 and 1936, the "D" designation denotes the upscale Peerless Grade, which featured fine scroll engraving on the receiver, Approximately 1/4 coverage of crisp, fine floral scroll engraving, zig-zag or geometric line borders framing the receiver panels and additional wedges of scroll engraving on the barrel jacket breech, magazine body, tangs and trigger guard. Serial number hand-engraved directly on the underside frame of the receiver. Upgraded, select checkered American walnut stock featuring period-correct point pattern checkering on both the wrist and the schnabel-tip forend, built with a classic English-style straight grip ,checkered black hard rubber buttplate featuring the Remington/UMC logo, gold-plated brass inscription oval with initials on the underside of the buttstock, equipped with upgraded folding leaf rear sights, King beaded blade front sights, and Marble's tang-mounted aperture peep sight. Long-Recoil, Fixed Magazine Fed, Semi-Automatic Rifle chambered in .30 Remington. Top of barrel sleeve marked "Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Remington Works, Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A. address over Browning patent dates. Lower tang marked "Remington/UMC Trademark" in circle. Matching serial number stamped inside the forearms channel. The action is smooth, the bore is excellent/bright with strong rifling. the wood is overall excellent with a few minor dings/scratches and the finish is about 85% with handling/edge wear, some dark spots of patina on the lower magazine.
